DDE Orientation Weekend
The US Army War College (USAWC) Department of Distance Education (DDE) will conduct a voluntary two-day orientation for the Class of 2022 at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, on 24-25 Apr 2020 or alternatively on 1-2 May 2020.
The goal of the orientation weekend is to help new students get acquainted with USAWC distance education online systems, provide insights regarding course methodology and introduce new students to the adult learning model. Each weekend delivers the same course content, affording students the opportunity to choose which date better accommodates their schedule.
27 March 2020 Update: Due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation and in compliance with HPCONC and the SECDEF stop movement for domestic (11 May 20) and international travel (24 May 20) the AY22 voluntary in-residence Orientation Weekends scheduled for 24-25 Apr and 1-2 May 2020 are CANCELLED.
In lieu of the in-resident orientation weekends all Class of 2022 students are encouraged to participate in the online Blackboard version of the Orientation course DE2300 "Introduction to Strategic Leader Education". This course will have enhanced orientation content including video presentations from last year's AY21 in-residence Orientation Weekend and Faculty Instructor lead collaboration events with each seminar. All enrolled AY22 students will receive a USAWC Welcome email after 14 April 2020 with specific instructions on how to access their USAWC Blackboard account and participate in DE2300.
Thank you for your patience.
17 March 2020 Update: The situation surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak continues to evolve at a rapid pace. Based on DoD travel guidance curtailing official military travel, the Department of Distance Education is standing by for the final word from the Commandant of the U.S. Army War College on the status of both orientation weekends. Once a final decision is made, we will post a message on this web page. Again, thank you for your patience.
Class of 2022,
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Military Health System, and the U.S. Army Public Health Center are closely monitoring the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). As has been reported in the press, health officials have identified a growing number of COVID-19 cases in numerous locations around the world and in the United States.
Given these events, the U.S. Army War College is assessing all options for the conduct of the resident orientation weekends on 24-25 April and 01-02 May 2020. At this time, students who have registered for one of these weekends should plan to attend this event.
Since this is a rapidly evolving situation, additional information and guidance will be provided as it becomes available.
Thank you for your patience.
